Fried Cheese-Filled Semolina Stars
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup fine semolina
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup corn oil
- 3/4 cup water
Filling
- 10 cubes cream cheese
For serving
- Syrup or sherbet
- Halabi pistachios
Preparation
In a deep bowl, put the flour, semolina, sugar, yeast, baking powder, corn oil, and water. Using a plastic spoon, stir the ingredients until you have a cohesive, smooth, but thick dough.
Cover the bowl with a piece of plastic wrap and place it in a warm place until the dough doubles in size.
Cut the cream cheese cubes into small squares.
Take a piece of dough the size of a walnut and shape it into a small disc in the palm of your hand. Place a piece of cheese in the middle. With your fingertips, seal the edges of the dough over the cheese in a star shape, making sure the center is completely sealed so the cheese doesn't leak during frying. Continue shaping the remaining dough and cheese into stars.
In a deep frying pan, pour oil to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until hot.
Fry several stars in the hot oil until golden brown. Using a slotted spoon, remove them and place directly in the syrup for a few seconds, then transfer to a serving plate.
Garnish the semolina stars with crushed pistachios and serve.
