Fried Dough Balls in Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons starch
  • 1 teaspoon rose water

For frying

  • corn oil

For serving

  • syrup or attar

For garnish

  • finely ground pistachio

Preparation

  1. In a deep bowl, put the water, sugar, yeast, and a quarter cup of flour. Mix with a whisk until well combined. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

  2. Add the remaining flour, oil, baking powder, salt, starch, and rose water. Mix until you get a thick, liquid batter. Continue mixing for a few minutes. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

  3. Heat oil in a deep pan to about 2 inches deep over medium heat until hot.

  4. Prepare a small bowl of corn oil and place it nearby.

  5. Prepare a deep bowl of syrup and place it nearby.

  6. Transfer some batter into a piping bag and cut a small tip off the end.

  7. Hold the piping bag in your right hand. Dip your left fingers in oil, squeeze out a small amount of batter, and cut it with your fingers to drop directly into the hot oil. Repeat to fill the pan with dough balls.

  8. Using a slotted spoon, fry until golden brown. Remove and immediately place in the syrup.

  9. Using another slotted spoon, turn the dough balls in the syrup several times, then transfer to a serving dish.

  10. Sprinkle with finely ground pistachio and serve.
