Fried Dough Balls in Syrup
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons starch
- 1 teaspoon rose water
For frying
- corn oil
For serving
- syrup or attar
For garnish
- finely ground pistachio
Preparation
In a deep bowl, put the water, sugar, yeast, and a quarter cup of flour. Mix with a whisk until well combined. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
Add the remaining flour, oil, baking powder, salt, starch, and rose water. Mix until you get a thick, liquid batter. Continue mixing for a few minutes. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
Heat oil in a deep pan to about 2 inches deep over medium heat until hot.
Prepare a small bowl of corn oil and place it nearby.
Prepare a deep bowl of syrup and place it nearby.
Transfer some batter into a piping bag and cut a small tip off the end.
Hold the piping bag in your right hand. Dip your left fingers in oil, squeeze out a small amount of batter, and cut it with your fingers to drop directly into the hot oil. Repeat to fill the pan with dough balls.
Using a slotted spoon, fry until golden brown. Remove and immediately place in the syrup.
Using another slotted spoon, turn the dough balls in the syrup several times, then transfer to a serving dish.
Sprinkle with finely ground pistachio and serve.
