Fried Semolina Stars with Cheese Filling
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup fine semolina
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup corn oil
- 3/4 cup water
Filling
- 10 cubes cream cheese
Serving
- Syrup
- Halabi pistachios
Preparation
In a deep bowl, place the flour, semolina, sugar, yeast, baking powder, corn oil, and water. Using a plastic spoon, mix the ingredients until you have a cohesive, smooth, and thick dough.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in a warm place until the dough doubles in size.
Cut the cream cheese cubes into small squares.
Take a piece of dough the size of a walnut and shape it into a small disc in your palm. Place a piece of cheese in the center. With your fingertips, seal the edges of the dough over the cheese in a star shape, ensuring the center is well sealed to prevent cheese from leaking during frying. Repeat with the remaining dough and cheese to form stars.
In a deep frying pan, add oil to a height of about 2 inches. Place the pan over medium heat until the oil is hot.
Fry several stars in the pan until they are golden brown. Using a slotted spoon, remove the semolina stars and place them directly in the syrup for a few seconds, then transfer to a serving plate.
Garnish the semolina stars with crushed pistachios and serve.
