How to Make Brown Butter

Ingredients

  • Butter

Equipment

  • Light-colored pan
  • Whisk, wooden spoon or spatula

Preparation

  1. Place the butter in the pan over medium heat; it will start to melt and then foam as the water evaporates.

  2. Once the butter has melted, stir it occasionally to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.

  3. After the foam subsides, you'll see the milk solids separating; keep stirring, and the butter will begin to turn a light golden color, giving off a nutty aroma, indicating it's almost ready.

  4. Keep a close eye as the color deepens to a golden brown; you'll also see browned bits forming at the bottom of the pan, which are the toasted milk solids that give browned butter its rich flavor.

  5. Once the butter reaches a deep golden-brown color, immediately remove it from the heat to prevent burning.

  6. You can either use the browned butter immediately or let it cool slightly for later use; if you want a smoother result, pour the butter through a fine mesh sieve to remove the milk solids.

Tips

  1. You can use it immediately in recipes or store it in an airtight container in the fridge for later use.
