Homemade Crispy Turkish Simit

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 to 5.5 cups flour

Coating

  • 1 teacup grape molasses
  • 1/2 teacup water
  • sesame seeds

Preparation

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, sugar, vegetable oil, and instant yeast; mix well.

  2. Add salt and gradually incorporate flour, kneading until the dough is slightly firmer than earlobe softness.

  3. Cover the dough and let it rise for 30 minutes.

  4. Divide the risen dough into 16 mandarin-sized pieces.

  5. For each piece, divide into two, roll into strips, and twist together to form simit shapes.

  6. Prepare the coating mixture by combining grape molasses and water.

  7. Dip each simit shape into the molasses-water mixture, coat with sesame seeds, and place on a baking tray.

  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20-25 minutes until crispy.
