Crispy Tofu with Savory Umami Sauce

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 3 tablespoons tamari or low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha or chili sauce of choice (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Tofu

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons sauce (from sauce recipe)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast

Preparation

  1. Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk until well incorporated.

  2. Add sauce to a pan on medium-low heat and cook it for 5 minutes until it thickens. Stir consistently.

  3. Add tofu to pan and evenly coat in sauce.

  4. Serve over brown rice and top with green onions!

Tofu cooking

  1. Freeze, fully defrost and press tofu before cooking. (OPTIONAL but results in great texture).

  2. Dice tofu into 3/4 inch cubes or use hands to break apart into nugget-like bites.

  3. Add tofu to a mixing bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of sweet and savory sauce and coat evenly.

  4. Add garlic powder and nutritional yeast. Coat evenly.

  5. Air fry at 390 degrees for 18-20 minutes. Flip every 7-8 minutes to cook evenly or bake at 400 degrees for 24-28 minutes also flipping every 7-8 minutes for best results.

  6. Check for desired crispiness and submerge in sauce!
