Stained Glass Heart Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup Isomalt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Edible sprinkles

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.

  2. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together and set aside.

  3. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

  4. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix well.

  5. Gradually add flour mixture and mix thoroughly.

  6. Let the dough rest in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

  7. Roll dough evenly between 2 parchment papers.

  8. Cut out hearts using a heart-shaped cookie cutter and then use a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the center part.

  9. Bake cutouts for about 8 minutes and let cool on a wire rack.

  10. Boil isomalt and water in a saucepan until it reaches 320°F.

  11. Pour melted isomalt into hearts and let cool. Flip them and brush half with white chocolate or royal icing.

  12. Fill hearts with sugar sprinkles, then place filled hearts on top, press lightly, and let cookies set.

  13. Decorate heart cookies with fondant if desired.

Notes

  1. These buttery sugar cookies feature a beautiful stained glass window effect and are probably the prettiest Valentine's cookies ever.
