Steamed Sago Cake
Ingredients
- 1 cup sago
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- A little syrup
- A little grated coconut
- A pinch of salt
Preparation
Clean the sago and drain it. Let it sit for a while.
In a container, mix sago, water, a little syrup, and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Grease the mold with a little oil. Meanwhile, heat the steamer.
Pour the sago mixture into the mold, filling it about three-quarters full.
When the steaming water boils, place the mold in the steamer.
Steam for 10 minutes or until cooked. Allow to cool.
In another container, mix grated coconut with a pinch of salt. Steam for 2 to 3 minutes to preserve freshness.
When ready to serve, combine the sago cake with the grated coconut mixture. It is best enjoyed cold.
Notes
This recipe yields about 18 pieces. Double the quantities for larger families.
The dessert is moderately sweet; add more sugar if desired.
