Savory Donut Sticks

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup soft butter

For frying

  • Oil

Preparation

  1. In the mixer bowl, place half of the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Attach the dough hook and mix on low speed until combined. Add the egg and mix until fully incorporated.

  2. In a small saucepan, place the milk and butter. Heat over medium heat until the butter melts and the milk is lukewarm.

  3. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and mix until you get a smooth dough. Add the remaining flour if the dough is too soft.

  4. Place the dough in a deep oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle 0.5 cm thick. Cut the dough into 1 cm wide strips using a pizza cutter.

  6. Thread the dough strips onto wooden sticks in a zigzag shape. Let the donut sticks rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

  7. In a deep skillet, add oil to a depth of 2 inches and heat over medium heat. Fry the donut sticks until golden brown. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with labneh and za'atar.
