Traditional Hyderabadi Osmania Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 1/4 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp milk (for brushing)
  • 1 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling, optional)

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, beat butter and powdered sugar until pale and fluffy.

  2. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and cardamom powder.

  3. Gradually add dry ingredients to butter-sugar mix. Pour in milk little by little and mix until a soft dough forms.

  4. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into round shapes using a cookie cutter.

  5. Set oven to 180ยฐC (350ยฐF).

  6. Place biscuits on a baking tray. Brush tops with milk for a golden finish. Optionally sprinkle sugar.

  7. Bake for 15โ€“18 minutes or until edges are just turning golden.

  8. Let them cool completely before serving.
