Turkish Semolina Cut Dessert

Ingredients

  • Half cup yogurt
  • Half cup vegetable oil
  • Half cup semolina
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 1 packet vanilla

Syrup

  • 3 cups water
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 4-5 drops lemon juice

Coating

  • Semolina

Preparation

  1. Prepare the syrup first: In a pot, add water, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir until sugar dissolves, bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 12-13 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  2. For the dough, in a large bowl, combine vegetable oil, egg, and yogurt and mix well. Add semolina, baking powder, and vanilla and stir again. Gradually add flour and knead to form a dough.

  3. Divide the dough into 4 pieces and shape each into long strips. Cut the strips into pieces about 2 fingers wide.

  4. Coat each piece in semolina.

  5. Place the coated pieces on a greased baking tray.

  6. Bake in a preheated 180°C oven until golden brown.

  7. Remove from the oven and transfer to a square dish.

  8. Pour the cooled syrup over the hot dessert.

  9. Flip the pieces occasionally to ensure even absorption of the syrup.

Tips

  1. Flipping the dessert occasionally helps it absorb the syrup better.
