Wonderful Brazilian Cheese Filled Bread Rolls

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup warm or room temperature milk
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 packet dry yeast or 1/2 tablespoon dry yeast
  • about 1/2 kilogram all-purpose flour

Filling

  • fresh cheese, very dry, as needed

Syrup

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • shredded coconut, for sprinkling (optional)

Preparation

  1. Combine all dough ingredients except flour in a bowl, adding flour gradually until the dough is soft, elastic, and no longer sticks to the hands

  2. Let the dough rise for 1 hour or until doubled in volume in a warm place, covered with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel

  3. Shape the risen dough into rolls, filling each with a piece of dry fresh cheese, and place in a greased pan

  4. Let the rolls rise again for 1 hour or until doubled in volume

  5. Brush the rolls with egg yolk and bake in a medium oven until golden, about 20 minutes

Syrup

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium heat, stirring constantly until reduced and thickened

  2. Pour the syrup over the warm rolls and, if desired, sprinkle with shredded coconut
