Turkish Salty Stick Cookies
Ingredients
- 250 grams soft butter or margarine
- 3 whole eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 heaping tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Flour: 4 cups minus two fingers (approximately 880 ml total, using 220 ml cup measure)
Topping
- 1 egg yolk
- A tip of teaspoon molasses
- Nigella seeds
Preparation
Mix egg, sugar, and yeast in a bowl using a whisk
Add salt and continue mixing
Add butter and knead by hand
Gradually add flour and knead until the dough is soft, non-sticky, and easy to shape
Without waiting, break off pieces the size of large walnuts and roll them into long sticks on a surface, aiming for medium thickness
Wrap each stick around a plastic straw or skewer tightly but without pressing, then slide off onto a parchment-lined tray
Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C on the second rack from the bottom for 35 minutes with fan off
Move to the middle rack and bake for an additional 5 minutes until golden brown
Remove from oven, cool, and it is ready to serve
Tips
Store without putting in a container to keep fresh
This cookie has a great flavor, is addictive like a snack, and does not stale easily
