Turkish Stuffed Onions

Ingredients

  • 4-5 medium onions
  • 250g ground beef
  • 1 tea glass fine bulgur
  • 1 tea glass rice (broken)
  • 1 onion
  • 1-2 tablespoons tomato or pepper paste
  • 3-4 tablespoons vegetable oil or olive oil
  • Salt
  • Mint
  • Black pepper
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Cumin
  • Red chili powder

Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon paste
  • Enough boiling water to lightly cover
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Oregano
  • A little butter

Preparation

  1. Peel the onions and cut them in half lengthwise. Boil in salted boiling water for 10-15 minutes, ensuring not to overboil to avoid tearing. Cool quickly in cold water.

  2. In a bowl, mix all the filling ingredients and knead them together.

  3. Stuff the prepared onions with the filling and arrange them in a baking dish or pot.

  4. Prepare the sauce by mixing the sauce ingredients and melting the butter in boiling water if using.

  5. Pour the sauce over the stuffed onions and cover the dish.

  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C covered for about 40 minutes until fully cooked, then uncover and bake until the top browns. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  1. Serve with black pepper sprinkled on top.
