Loukoumades Fried Dough Balls in Syrup

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup yogurt

Syrup

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 pinch saffron

Preparation

  1. Place the flour, yeast, sugar, starch, cardamom, water, and yogurt in a bowl. Mix with a mixer on low speed for a few minutes to form a stretchy dough.

  2. Cover the bowl and let it rest in a warm place for half an hour.

  3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan.

  4. Put 2 tablespoons of oil in a small plate.

  5. Using a teaspoon dipped in oil, scoop dough and drop it into the hot oil, repeating to fill the pan.

  6. Stir continuously with a slotted spoon until the loukoumades are golden brown.

  7. Place the fried loukoumades in the syrup for a few minutes, then serve.

  8. For the syrup, combine sugar, water, lemon juice, turmeric, salt, cardamom, and saffron in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 6 minutes. Allow it to cool.
