Budget-Friendly Turkish Baklava
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 eggs
- 100 g butter
- 125 ml vegetable oil
- 125 ml milk
- a pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons yogurt
- 2 tablespoons grape vinegar
- 200 ml water
- 7 to 7.5 cups flour
For rolling
- Starch as needed
For topping
- 250 to 300 g butter
Syrup
- 4 cups granulated sugar
- 5 cups water
- a piece of lemon
Preparation
Mix all dough ingredients together and knead until smooth.
Rest the dough for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to roll.
Divide the dough and roll out thin sheets using starch to prevent sticking.
Layer the sheets in a 30 cm tray, brushing with butter between each layer.
Bake at 150-160°C slowly for a long time until golden and crisp.
While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling sugar, water, and a piece of lemon for about 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened.
Once baked, pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava and allow it to absorb.
Notes
This recipe makes two 30 cm trays of baklava.
Ensure both the baklava and syrup are hot when combining for best results.
Measurements are based on 1 cup = 200 ml and 1 tea glass = 125 ml.
