Smoky Vegan Tempeh Bacon

Ingredients

  • 1 package tempeh
  • Water, enough to cover tempeh by 1/2 inch
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce

Preparation

  1. Slice the tempeh into thin slices, aiming for about 20 slices from one package.

  2. Place the tempeh slices in a non-stick pan and add enough water to cover them by approximately 1/2 inch.

  3. Sprinkle the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, liquid smoke, ground black pepper, maple syrup, soy sauce, and vegan Worcestershire into the pan.

  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated.

  5. Optionally, drain the pan and fry the tempeh in a little oil, or transfer it to an oiled air fryer basket and cook at 370°F for 15 minutes or until the edges begin to blacken.
