Turkish Buttery Pastry Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 egg whites
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 cups flour (add gradually)
- 1 tablespoon dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon soft butter
Filling
- 200g melted butter
Topping
- 2 egg yolks
- Poppy seeds
Preparation
Mix all ingredients except flour in a kneading bowl.
Add flour gradually to form a soft dough.
Cover and let the dough rest for one hour.
Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes and divide it into 16 equal pieces.
Roll out each piece on a floured surface to the size of a dinner plate.
Stack the rolled pieces in a container, brushing butter between layers.
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Remove from refrigerator and shape into 3-inch wide strips.
Roll the strips into rolls.
Place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet and press down with hands.
Brush with egg yolk and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
Bake in a preheated 185°C fan oven for 30-35 minutes.
Serve after cooling slightly.
Tips
Can be made with vegetable oil or butter for different flavors.
Ideal for Ramadan; prepare ahead and freeze, then thaw at room temperature or heat before consuming.
