Indonesian Spicy Beef Dendeng

Ingredients

  • 500g lean beef
  • 1 tomato
  • 1-2 packets tamarind
  • Salt to taste
  • Petai beans to taste (optional)
  • Potatoes as needed
  • Cooking oil as needed
  • Beef bouillon powder as needed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Tamarind, vinegar, or lime juice as needed

Ground spices

  • 100g curly red chilies or as needed
  • 10 shallots
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Preparation

  1. Boil the beef with 1-2 packets of tamarind, salt, and bay leaves until the water reduces.

  2. Pound the beef until flat and set aside.

  3. Heat cooking oil and fry the beef briefly until the outside changes slightly, then drain.

  4. Fry the potatoes until golden and set aside.

  5. Prepare the ground spice paste by blending the red chilies, shallots, salt, and water until smooth.

  6. Sauté the tomato in the oil until wilted, then add the ground spice paste and cook until done.

  7. Add beef bouillon powder or sugar if desired, add tamarind, vinegar, or lime juice, add petai beans, and cook until done. Adjust taste.

  8. Mix with the fried beef and fried potatoes, stir well, and serve.
